Here is a super simple crazy chocolate cake you can bake with kids. It’s moist and delicious, despite it not having any milk, butter or eggs. This makes it a great one to make when catering for children with food allergies or you’re just missing these items in your food pantry.
Okay guys, I’m totally jumping on board the crazy chocolate cake recipe train. I know a lot of other wonderful bloggers have done it, but it really is a simple recipe that you’ll be pleased to have stored in your precious recipe folder. It’s my go-to cake recipe. Check out my other recipes here.
I also love it because it’s a great one to make with your children. This super simple crazy chocolate cake is a recipe that you can literally throw together into the one bowl. Hello, that’s brilliant.

History of the crazy cake
You’d never know that this cake has no milk, butter or eggs because it’s so soft, moist and delicious, hence it being called a ‘crazy chocolate cake’. This cake was often made during the Great Depression when milk was hard to come by.
- - 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- - 3 tbsp cococa powder
- - 1 cup sugar
- - 1 tsp baking powder
- - 1/2 tsp salt
- - 1 tsp white vinegar
- - 5 tbsp vegetable oil
- - 1 cup water
- - 1 tsp vanilla essence
- Preheat oven 190C.
- In a large roasting tray add all dry ingredients.
- Mix well.
- Add vinegar, vanilla and vegetable oil and whisk carefully
- Add water and combine together
- Bake for 25-30 minutes (or until skewer comes out clean)
- Once completely cool, spread icing
- Basic Icing : 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 - 3 tbsp water
- Butter frosting (seen above): 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cocoa powder, 1/2 milk.
This is one of the most easiest of cakes you will ever bake. This is a super simple crazy chocolate cake you can bake with kids and enjoy a piece (or two) as part of a birthday or afternoon tea. I love that it’s also great to make for children who may have food allergies.
