Homemade pizza that kids can make themselves

February 9, 2018 by Kate Leave a Comment

I don’t know about your place, but pizza is always a winning meal in our home. With so many of us juggling picky little eaters, I thought you might be interested to learn my approach to making homemade pizza that kids can make themselves!

Early evenings can be a struggle. Kids can be tired, hungry. unmotivated to play independently and just uninspired to do very much at all. Often I feel the same at this time of day and I find myself desperately searching the pantry for something quick and easy to whip up and serve for dinner.

Hello, homemade pizzas!

As parents we know, if a child helps to make something, they are much more likely to want to eat it. Making homemade pizzas is wonderful because children can make them to their own taste and they can get involved in the process.

Recommended ages:  2 years +

(Strict and active supervision is required at all times)

Pizza base

Making your own pizza base is easier than you think. The only downfall I see with it is having to wait for the dough to rise, but this can be done in advance and the overall taste makes it worthwhile. I choose to use this recipe for making pizza bases with my girls.

I always love a good back up plan though. *wink*

When I’m wanting to get my girls (Possum, aged 6 years and Boo aged 3 years) started on the pizza toppings I reach for the Pita Pockets. They make a great pizza base and it obviously skips a big step in the making process.

Adding the topping

Get your child involved in the process.

Begin by asking them to spread the tomato base to the pizza base. This is great for their skills.

Next sprinkle your ham or chicken.

Ask them what they would like on their pizza. You could help them make good choices and encourage them to ‘add a rainbow of colours’ to their pizza. Of course this would help your children become more familiar with various foods and consolidate their knowledge of colours.

For our pizzas we used: ham, corn, capsicum (green/yellow/red), grated cheese and sesame seeds.

Once we finished decorating topping our pizzas, we put our pizzas in the oven for about 15-20 minutes at 170C.

Every pizza will have different cooking times, so keep your eye on yours so they don’t burn.

Of course our girls really enjoyed eating their own handmade pizza and regularly ask to make them again for dinner. They are certainly a great meal, quick, easy and a sure fire way to get your fussy child to eat their dinner.

Have you made handmade pizzas with your kids at home before?
