Vegemite and cheese scrolls

January 22, 2015 by Kate 8 Comments

These bite-size vegemite and cheese scrolls will have you making a baking them with your children time and time again. They are quick to make and are a great addition to any school lunch box. Perfect for any Australia Day gathering too!

Vegemite and cheese scrolls made by kids as an Australia Day cooking activity

I wouldn’t dare tell you how many of these delicious Vegemite and cheese scrolls I ate once they were removed from the oven. I may or may not have burnt my tongue trying to eat one before it had cooled. Fact is, they are seriously so delicious and I was inspired to make them with Australia Day only being just around the corner.

Have you ever tried Vegemite?

It is a taste that Australian’s grow up with and is a spread that could be considered as common as strawberry jam (jelly) or peanut butter. It’s difficult to describe how it tastes except to say that it is very salty. If you ever get the opportunity to try it then I encourage you to give it a go and see what you think. You might be just like many other Australians and love the taste, especially if it’s used in these Vegemite and cheese scrolls.

Vegemite FacePossum (aged 3 years) absolutely loved making these simple Vegemite and cheese scrolls. She felt very independent when it came to putting the recipe together and couldn’t wait to offer them to her dad on his return home from work.

I know, it seems incredible that they are so easy to make and such an ideal cooking activity to do with children. We will no doubt enjoy making this recipe again and serving them to friends and family this coming Australia Day.

Oh yes…… My almost 2 year old Granddaughter was unwell a month ago and would only eat Vegemite sandwiches. Well I guess that’s not so unusual except that she lives half a world away from Australia. I’m going to be with her for her birthday and I’m paying for airline baggage because otherwise I can’t take her a supply of the “Good Stuff” in carry on luggage. Looove this scroll idea! We’ll do it together.

Don that’s absolutely hilarious! I was probably quite similar to your granddaughter growing up. I love Vegemite. Glad to hear she is feeling better. 🙂
These scrolls are seriously delicious. In fact, we made some just yesterday. I know she will love them. We also made some with bacon and cheese. You can also make a sweet variation and use jam.
