I recently received an email from someone asking what wooden toys children would love to receive as a gift and if there were any that I’d recommend. Wooden toys are certainly a great choice to make over plastic toys. I’m not rejecting children playing with plastic toys, all play is beneficial, but if budget allows then there are some reasons for you to consider toys of the wooden variety –
- Interaction – Wooden toys don’t have the buttons and the like. This encourages your child to interact with it manually, rather than simply pressing a button and letting it do its thing. So much more creativity is required.
- Texture – The texture of wood is obviously very different to that of plastic.
- Quality – My husband still has a wooden toy that his grandfather owned so many years ago. Wooden toys last many more years than plastic toys, which can crack and split and not be as high in quality.
- Environment – Plastic toys take hundreds of years to degrade and require a lot more resources to be made. They also contain batteries, which also act negatively on the environment.
SO with those in mind I have spent many, many hours researching for some of the best wooden toys that you can buy online, ones I feel confident your child would love to receive as a gift, maybe for Christmas. I’ve also grouped the toy recommendations so it will hopefully be helpful to you.

Many of the toys we see today, mostly of the modern plastic variety, work on distracting children rather than providing them with opportunities to deeply engage in creative play like what wooden toys offer. Wooden toys are also much more environmentally friendly and can last many years.

I think it’s awesome that things like wooden toys exist. I remember as a child having a few wooden toys to play with that I adored and are still in the basement of my parents’ home. It’s true that due to the lack of buttons on wooden toys it allows the child to learn about the toy thoroughly. I would just need to add that if the wooden toy breaks you need to be aware of it so that it doesn’t hurt the child because chipped wood can be dangerous.
