If you’ve been following me recently, you’d know that my daughter Possum was involved in an awful accident that caused her femur to break. Yes, the strongest bone in the body – broken. It has been just awful and our little family have been thrown into an experience like nothing we could ever have expected or imagined.
With Possum’s 7th birthday, Christmas and Summer holiday break approaching, it was clear she was going to be spending it in a wheelchair. It was completely overwhelming to think how we were going to manage, but we did and I’m amazed and proud to share what we did.
Fun activities for children in a wheelchair
Children are so resilient and they can be happy enough to face reality and just go with it. That was our experience with Possum. She was able to make the most of her reduced mobility.
Here are some of the fun ways Possum was able to still be entertained and happy while in a wheelchair.
Fun activities children can do in a wheelchair
- Cooking
- Visit the library
- Gardening
- Swimming in the pool – this brand made it possible
- Attending dance concerts
- Zoo
- Drawing and colouring in
- karaoke at home
- Visit the local cinema
- Playground – some can be wheelchair friendly!
- Go out for ice cream
- Aquarium
- Craft activities and beading
- Pretend play (hair salons etc)
- Face painting
- hand sewing
- Water play – again, this brand is beyond awesome
- Make milkshakes
- Record a video on the iPad
- LEGO
- Play dough
- Printable activities
These are just a few of the things Possum got up to whilst being in a wheelchair. As you can see, she did many of the things she would have done pre accident.
My husband and I have worked very hard to encourage Possum to not feel limited and give her opportunities to prove to herself that she can do a lot more than she realised or that people would expect.
Do you have any other activity ideas for a child to do when in a wheelchair?

Thankyou for the tips.My little girl just broke her Tibia or shin bone and is also wheel chair bound with a cast up to her thigh.Very hard indeed to keep them entertained even though she I see in great spirits most of the time it can get her very down at times.

Hi Leah,
Thank you so much for reaching out. Oh my gosh, I’m so very sorry to hear about your daughter. The poor thing! 🙁 It’s completely distressing to see our children in any kind of pain, let alone have such a bad break in the body. I hope she is well on the road to her recovery. The journey to recovery is long and hard Leah, I totally get it. I hope that what I’ve shared is helpful to your little girl and family.
My daughter now is doing very well. She has made a full recovery, which on an xray it’s hard to even see where the break in the bone was! Kids are amazing. I really hope the same for your daughter. Please feel free to reach out directly to me Leah if you want to chat. I totally know how hard it is on your child AND YOU! laughingkidslearn@gmail.com
