Glow in the Dark Shoes

August 20, 2013 by Kate 19 Comments

Children love anything that will glow in the dark and these shoes will be no exception. Kids can create individual designs on their own glow in the dark shoes or give all the bits to a friend as a unique and very cool birthday gift!

Children make glow in the dark shoes as a fun activity or great for gifts
Here is a simple design I did myself at home. The contrast is spectacular!

The good news is that you don’t need a lot to make these yourself at home.
  • Canvas shoes (Big W purchased for $7)
  • Craft glue
  • Glitter
  • Glow in the Dark 3D fabric paint (purchased at Art store for $3.99)

Children can go as wild and creative as they like decorating their shoes. In the daylight this ‘Scribbles’ brand can almost go unnoticed, until it’s dry and placed in a dark room. I think outlining the actual shoe in the glow paint is a good idea.

Teachable moments –

  • Children create a design on paper first and then consider possible alterations
  • Discuss symmetry and if their deciding on symmetrical designs

It’s important to show patients and wait at least 24 hours for the glow in the dark paint to dry completely before considering how to decorate the shoe for ‘day wear’. Once it is dry, however, add craft glue before sprinkling on your glitter. Tap off the excess glitter to reveal your design.

Teachable moments –

  • Consider how two designs can work for both day and night.

Here is our shoes looking gorgeous and ready to wear during the DAY.

As the light begins to fade our amazing shoes begin to show signs of their ‘glowing in the dark’ potential for NIGHT.

And our amazing day shoes have been completely transformed to these amazing shoes that glow in the dark. Lets be honest, what kid wouldn’t want a pair of these???? I also love that if you’re out at night it would make finding your child a whole lot easier. LOL

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post and like this activity.
Love to read any feedback you might have.

I have to be honest Hannah, I did consider getting myself a pair of shoes to do this on. Maybe I could just wear them at night around the house. LOL

SUCH a great idea. My only problem would be getting them off my Miss 3’s feet when it’s bed time! Have pinned. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s so funny you say that Danya because my little Possum has been clip clopping around the house in them refusing to take them off. You’ll notice there are no photographs of her wearing them and that’s because they are about 3 sizes too big. Funny and cute.
