You know me, I love when play ideas for kids is simple and not fancy. Give kids a set of pots and pans and they’re entertained for hours, that kind of thing.

Inspired by that approach, Boo (aged 4.5 years) and I are excited to share our take on the classic of pompoms stuffed into a whisk idea. It’s a fine motor ribbon and whisk activity, which we know you’ll love.

Recommended age: 2 years +
(Strict and active supervision is required at all times)

not pompoms and whisk, but ribbons and a whisk for your child to pull at and remove. Fine motor ribbon and whisk activity

What’s so great about this activity is that it’s super easy to prepare.

All you need is –

  • Clean whisk
  • Lengths of ribbon in various colours

Simply stuff the lengths of ribbon into the head of the whisk. If some of the ribbon pushes out, that’s totally fine! Easier for little ones to grab.

The purpose of the activity is to have your child pull out each strand of ribbon one at a time.

There is so many benefits in your child engaging in an activity like this, or the pompom whisk idea.

Not only is it a bit of fun for them, it’s so wonderful for your child’s fine motor skills. Pinching at one end of the ribbon engages the smaller muscles in the hand, which later helps them to grip a pencil to write, draw, colour in etc.

Depending on what ribbons you have available, it’s always a fun idea to challenge your child’s understanding of colours and ask them to pull at a particular colour.

It’s a great way to easily expand their vocabulary around learning and identifying colours.

Would this be an activity your child would like to try?
