Here is a painting activity that doesn’t use a traditional painting brush. It’s a celery flower stamping craft for kids! The size of the celery base is easy for little hands to hold and the texture and print that’s left behind from the celery stalks makes it look like the petals of a flower.
This celery flower stamping craft for kids has been on my list of things to try with Possum (aged 5 years) and Boo (aged 2.5 years) for a long time. Celery is one of those vegetables we use quite a lot as snacks and in our cooking. It was, therefore, not hard to reuse the celery stem and use it in this painting and stamping activity.
Recommended age: 2 years +
(Strict and active supervision is required at all times)
Celery flower stamping craft for kids
To prepare this activity, you will need –
- Stem of a celery vegetable (lettuce works quite well too)
- Paint
- Paper
As you can imagine, it really is quite simple for children to print and stamp with the end of a celery stalk. The ends of a celery stalk leave what looks like the petal so of a flower. This is perfect as a Spring time painting activity for kids.
Colours and mixing colours
Of course your child can use whatever colours they want to! Boo wanted to use all of them on the celery stalk and it looked really beautiful on the paper.
Texture
The texture that is left behind from the stamping motion is really lovely. We found the paint too a little while longer to dry as the texture was a lot thicker than what it would have been if we used a paint brush.
This celery flower stamping craft for kids was a lot of fun to do. It was super easy to set up and it really did have a big ‘wow factor’ when my girls realised that the celery stalk was able to create what looked like a beautiful flower or rose.
Has your child ever tried painting without a paint brush?
