The Disappearing Act

March 5, 2013 by Kate 51 Comments

Here is a fun way of playing with your baby and it is much like peek-a-boo, which they all know and love. I like to call it the disappearing act as they see an object appear and disappear in a container. It taps into developing their understanding of object permanence, so the object hasn’t actually disappeared but is hiding behind something.

Possum (10 months) plays with this handmade toy like she is seeing it for the first time. It’s because she is still learning about object permanence and that things don’t necessarily disappear because they are out of sight. I hope you find time to make one of these toys for your baby.

Recommended age: 6 months+
(Active supervision is required on all my activities)

To make this handmade toy you will need –
  • Large clear plastic container
  • Paper
  • Sticky tape
  • Pompom (or similar)

Cut the paper to fit inside the wall of the container. Carefully add it to one end of the container and check that the paper isn’t transparent.  You might want to add some sticky tape in order to secure the paper to the container.

Drop in your object and tightly secure the lid. If you’re concerned about the object escaping them be sure to hot glue the lid closed. Now you’re little one is ready to play!

Test it out and check that the object moves from one end of the container to the other with ease and doesn’t get caught. Once you’re happy, your little one should be ready to play ‘The Disappearing Act’.

Possum had a great time with her little magic trick. The first time the pompom disappeared she looked surprised and looked inside the container to see where it went.

She had a great time making the pompom appear and disappear and it became like a game.

 APPEARS

DISAPPEARS!!!!!
This is such a fabulous handmade toy and I really encourage you to make one for the little person in your life. They find them such great fun.

What other objects could you use in the container?
