Here is a super simple push and pull homemade toy box you can make for children to play with. Using only a few materials that you’d find around your home or classroom, you can make this toy and it will be one that your child will have fun playing with and learn from many times over.
A few years ago I made a homemade toy, which I called ‘The Tugging Box‘ and you guys absolutely went crazy for it. I have to agree, it was a great toy to make and one that really taps into the natural instincts of a child. Well in light of that, I’ve made another cool idea. It’s a push and pull homemade toy box for children to play with.
Recommended ages: 2 years +
(Strict and active supervision is required at all times)
Push and pull homemade toy box for children
To make your very own push and pull homemade toy box you will need –
- Firm box (I used a shoe box)
- Scissors
- Thick drinking straws
To make this push and pull homemade toy box you simply want to make some small holes into the top of the box. I used my scissors to do this. As I was making the holes I was cautious to not hurt myself and not make the holes too large or too small for the straws to fit through.
Importance of push and pull toys
We are absolutely surrounded by push and pull forces. Gravity keeps us to the ground and even our daily actions include the push and pull force. Think about your daily life and how often you need to pull open a door or even push it closed.
Children can practice this scientific force of push and pull by playing with various push and pull toys, or you can make then a push and pull homemade toy box. This incorporates both the pushing and pulling motion.
Learning behind the push and pull homemade toy box
Boo (aged 2.5 years) absolutely loved playing with this homemade toy and used it over and over again.
Some of the reasons I love it as her mother is –
- it teaches a child both the push and pull motion
- develops hand – eye coordination
- develops fine motor skills
- improves colour identification
- can be used to include counting and one to one correspondence
Including push and pull toys in your child’s daily play is very important, because when you think about it, we use these forces everyday in our daily life! Here is a simple to make push and pull homemade toy for children to having fun with over and over again.

Great idea, that’s a task for kids to fit a straw into a hole in the box, cool to develop eye and hand coordination. Thanks for sharing, we’ll play this all day long 🙂
