How to make mint scented play dough

July 16, 2014 by Kate 12 Comments

Here are the instructions on how to make mint scented play dough. It’s simple to make and smells amazing. Such a fun play dough for kids. mint scented play dough

Mint is such a strong and fresh scent that I thought it would be wonderful to include it in some play dough. A new batch of scented play dough was certainly on the ‘to do’ list. I also knew it was going to be the perfect entertainment for Possum (aged 2.5 years) whilst we were stuck indoors because of chilly weather.

As if on autopilot, I began whipping up my popular basic play dough recipe. I love how silky soft it is and that it only takes minutes to make. To ensure it is scented with mint, I used the following recipe.

How to make mint scented play dough

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
2 tbsp oil
4 tbsp cream of tartar
2 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon peppermint essence
10 drops of green food colouring

Put it into a large bowl and combine well. Once combined kneed the dough to distribute the food colouring and essence.

Smelling mint for sensory experience playdough
I always like to make an effort to help Possum experience a variety of safe scents and smells. It’s all part of learning about the world around her and teaching her to work out what smells she likes and doesn’t. All exploration.

I see the gorgeous blog ‘The Imagination Tree’ has previously made a similar natural minty playdough! Be sure to check it out.

Playing with scented playdough
Play dough is certainly one of those activities that will occupy Possum for quite awhile. The fresh mint leaves and scented play dough certainly filled the room with a beautiful aroma. Whilst she played, I chose to sprinkle a few fresh mint leaves around the play dough and have her do whatever she felt inspired to do. It was really a joy to watch.

I work in a special needs preschool and these tactile ideas with good smells are wonderful! We did make pickle playdough using juice from the pickle jar.
