Healthy bite recipe toddlers can make!

Healthy bites recipe that toddlers can make themselves. Laughing Kids Learn
There are a few things that I want Possum (22 months) to really value in life and one is her health and the importance of healthy eating. It can be so hard to instil in children, especially when we find ourselves exposed to so much highly processed foods.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t thinking giving your children an occasional ‘sometimes’ treat is a bad thing, however, since discovering Possum is anaphylactic to egg I have become almost obsessed with checking labels and finding out what is in the food we eat.

With this in mind I decided to have a go at throwing together a few ingredients and making mini healthy bites that would make a great cooking experience for Possum and that she could basically make herself. Because after all, children are much more likely to eat something they’ve made themselves. So here we go, healthy bite recipe toddlers can make themselves.

Healthy Bite recipe toddlers can make

Ingredients
* 2 cups rolled oats
* 1/2 cup sultanas
* 1/3 cup cranberries
* 1 tsp marmalade or orange peel (optional)
* 1/2 cup apple sauce

Steps
Throw it all into a bowl and mix well.
Roll into small balls
Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown (180C or 356F)

This recipe is so easy that your toddler can do it.

It was a beautiful day and so we took our cooking outdoors! With freshly washed hands we were ready to start the cooking process. I discussed with her all that we needed (measuring tools and ingredients) and she felt the different packaging.

Possum had a great time helping measure the dry ingredients before pouring it into a large bowl.

Adding all the ingredients was lots of fun and Possum had a turn at mixing it all up.

Next we added the ‘wet’ ingredients (apple sauce).
Just like licking a spoon, Possum loved dipping her finger into the almost empty measuring cup.

Once the apple sauce was mixed in the apple sauce tasted a little difference.

I had to take over this part of the cooking process, although Possum had a great go at rolling the mixture into small golf-ball sized balls. Of course if you find the mixture too dry and hard to roll then add a tablespoon or two more of the apple sauce to help it combine.

    I don’t have any applesauce but I do have some very ripe bananas. Wish me luck!

        I love this idea!! My daughter is 18 months and she is very hands on.
        This question is very off topic, but what camera do you use?

          Hi Serre. Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I had to check! My camera is a SONY HD NEX-5. I added a lens to it too. It isn’t super fancy but it takes quality pictures and isn’t too big to hold and throw around. 🙂

    I love this recipe – and it’s great that the little ones can make it themselves. I’ve just added the ingredients to my shopping list and we’ll have a go at this this afternoon!

      Wonderful to read your comment Clare. Thank you! We have made these a few times and they don’t seem to last very long and get eaten. Hope you enjoy them too. Feel free to email me a picture and I can post it to my FB page – laughingkidslearn@gmail.com

    Made these this morning with the wee ones and only added a tad bit of honey (2 tbsp, maybe?) to hold it all together a bit better! Turned out wonderfully delicious! 🙂 Thanks for sharing, this may become a new fave in our house!

    These would not hold together when mixed. Added more applesauce , then some honey . Could not roll them into balls , had to squeeze mixture into ball . Any tips as to why these would not roll.

      Hi Veronica. Thanks for contacting me. I’m sorry you had trouble with these. I can only assume that the ingredients in your country responds slightly different to where I am in Australia. The apple sauce should have moistened the other ingredients and allowed them to form a ball. I think you were clever to add a bit of honey. Hopefully they still tasted delicious!

        I had the same problem at first – I gave the mix a little time to moisten, then instead of balls I pushed the mix firmly into a mini muffin pan. Added a few drops of pure maple syrup on top and gave it a minute to soak in so it’d have a touch more sweetness and a little more hold. I also used an apple / sweet potato / blueberry puree pouch instead of plain applesauce because hidden veggies! 😉 They’re in the oven now – can’t wait to try them!
