Disappearing Candy Cane science experiment

December 4, 2012 by Kate 3 Comments

Here is a fun and simple Christmas science experiment that you’re children are sure to be amazed by. Did you know that it is possible to make a candy cane disappear?
Disappearing candy cane science experiment that your children are sure to love doing this Christmas.
It always seems the way, Christmas comes around and there is candy everywhere. Didn’t we just recover from Halloween? Hahaha We are not huge candy consumers so this is a science experiment that we love to do year after year over Christmas. It’s great for children to observe the changes, as they happen quite quickly. It’s also wonderful to hear all their curious questions about why the changes are occurring and bring in other ways to possibly make it happen.
The changes are quite amazing.

Simply add warm water and watch it start to bubble and disappear before your very eyes!!!!

35 MINUTES!!!

Why does this happen?
Candy cane lollies are made from sugar and the warm water simply dissolves it.

Children will love to conduct this great science Christmas experiment so give it a go today. You may like them to document the process by getting them to write or draw what they see after various timed intervals.

Taking the investigation process further
  • What happens when you use cold water?
  • Does it matter how much water is used?
  • What happens if I put it in milk?
  • What happens if you use a candy cane with different colours?
  • How much of a difference does it make when using different containers?

Do your children like conducting science experiments?
