Very simple baby play activity that turns a simple tissue box into a learning discovery box. Your baby will be occupied and have great fun playing and pulling out and exploring all the wonderful treasures that have been hidden inside. It’s a game that they can play over and over again! Poor Possum (aged 3 years) has been quite unwell this week and it has been the common parenting juggle of managing her illness with a baby. Boo (9 months) is on the move and into absolutely everything. You might have seen some of her shenanigans over on my Instagram account. It has been tiring to say the least.
Possum is like any toddler and doesn’t sit still for long and so when I found her curled up asleep on the couch I knew I had to give her the peace and quiet she needed to allow her body to recover from her sickness. Introducing the tissue discovery box, which is a perfect handmade toy for curious babies and great way to keep them occupied.
Baby play idea using a tissue discovery box
This baby play activity using a tissue box couldn’t be easier to make too. I simply used an empty tissue box and collected a few safe objects that would fit inside and be great for baby Boo to find and investigate.
Some of the objects that you could add to the empty tissue box might be –
- clean sock
- whole piece of fruit
- rattle
- water bottle
- small board book
Of course safety is paramount and active supervision is required during the time your baby is playing. Boo loved playing with her discovery box. She loved peering into the box and noticing various objects and problem solving how to get them out. It was also interesting to see which objects she chose over others. With each object Boo would spend time looking over the object (analysing) and experimenting with what it could do. She would shake it, hit it on the ground, pull it or give it a good chew. It makes for a wonderful sensory experience. This activity reminded a lot about a post I did with Possum years ago, which I called the Disappearing Act.
It might seem like a very simple activity to give your baby and slightly obvious, however, it’s always great to be reminded of the great fun they can have with a few pieces from around the home. Boo has played with this discovery tissue box over and over again and because you can change the objects, it keeps it really interesting for her.
What other safe objects would you include?

This is such a great idea! I would include some different types of fabric and maybe even some velcro! So much FUN!
Great thinking Louise! Little Boo was playing with this box again today. She loves sticking her head almost IN the box to see what she might find. Quite funny.
